Hi, I’m Lauren.

I help adults to transform their piano practice into a calm and efficient process so they develop a relaxed technique and experience the joy of playing their favourite music with confidence.

What You’ll Learn

#1 Practice Like A Pro

Adults have limited practice time.

That’s why I teach professional practice techniques that maximise progress from shorter sessions. After every lesson, you’ll receive detailed practice notes to follow. Everything has a clear goal - you’ll learn how to approach exercises and pieces systematically, rather than repeatedly playing through music with little result.

Students make meaningful progress, achieving more than in longer, unfocused practice times - and with better retention. Most importantly, you’ll develop the ability to solve musical challenges on your own. The aim of our sessions is to give you independence, and I share all of my personal strategies with you to make your practice time more rewarding.

#2 Technique That Lasts

Adults want to feel free at the piano.

That’s why I work with each student to develop an efficient technique that is sustainable over the long-term. Through specific technical exercises with reference videos, we grow awareness of any tension that has developed. I guide you to focus on the breath and to use minimal effort rather than forcing movements, so you play in a mindful and relaxed way.

My teaching is based on my own professional technical approach that has supported me for years. This technique is transferrable across classical and contemporary styles - from playing a Mozart piano sonata to creating your own cover of a Top 40 hit. Students soon find that they can play with more ease, and have greater enjoyment in their practice sessions.

#3 The Music You Love

Adults dream of playing their favourite music.

That’s why I personalise learning materials for each student - drawing on my professional experience to adapt custom piano arrangements for your ability while keeping each song’s special character. Alongside this, targeted exercises, music theory discussions and carefully selected pieces will address your gaps in knowledge.

This move away from traditional method books means that you can work towards your goals without unnecessary detours - a positive approach that students find highly motivating. Most of all, you’ll experience the genuine joy of connecting with the meaningful music that inspired you to learn the piano in the first place.

About Me

Lauren Carey Kevin

Hi, I’m Lauren! I’ve been playing the piano for 31 years. Trained in Classical Piano Performance at the Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne, Australia, I began teaching the piano in 2010.

Having developed a strong passion for the benefits of piano playing for adult wellbeing, I didn’t feel there were programmes that truly acknowledged this learning journey. That’s why in 2023, I decided to focus all my teaching energies towards specialist online piano lessons for adults.

I love to perform as a pianist and singer, as well as compose songs and arrange music. I’ve worked across classical, pop and musical theatre styles, from Australia to the UK to my homeland of New Zealand. I now live in Sydney.

My favourite part of coaching at Piano Focus is the amazing people I meet, who inspire me in my own life journey every single day.

  • I'm so glad to hear that you are considering starting your piano journey. Please know that I have created Piano Focus to be a very welcoming space for adult beginner pianists, and we will move at whatever pace you feel comfortable. To chat about this more, please feel free to contact me above.

  • I encourage my students to follow their own interests and as such, the genres of music that we look at are always expanding. Previous examples include classical piano pieces, film scores, musical theatre songs, pop songs and hymns. To discuss this further, please feel free to contact me above.

  • A variety of pianos and keyboards are suitable. I consider each student’s instrument when preparing exercises and music arrangements.
